Catalog description

This course focuses on software and AI system safety within the framework of prevention through design. Students will explore system safety engineering principles applied to software-intensive and AI-enabled systems, emphasizing compliance with MIL-STD 882E, the Joint Software Systems Safety Engineering Handbook, and aerospace standards ARP4754A and ARP4761A. Topics include hazard analysis, requirements development, functional safety, safety-critical software design, AI safety assurance, verification/validation, certification, and risk management. The course will blend theory, case studies, and applied projects that integrate safety methodologies across system and software lifecycles.
