Catalog description

This course introduces students to the concepts and practices of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Students learn how to collect, manage, and visualize spatial data to study people, places, and change over time. Key topics include basic cartography and map design, georeferencing, spatial data models, and introductory analytical techniques such as overlay and proximity analysis. Through lab assignments in ArcGIS Pro software, students gain experience creating digital maps and conducting basic spatial analysis. Emphasis is placed on applying GIS to questions in the social sciences and physical sciences, such as land use change, population patterns, and cultural landscapes.
