Principles of solid-state synthesis, classical equilibrium approaches, diffusion and chemical transport, non-equilibrium and deposition methods; high temperature and high pressure synthesis; basic characterization techniques using X-rays, electrons, and neutrons; basic structure types and symmetry; optical, electrical and magnetic properties; examples will relate to materials used for energy harvesting, sensors, and catalysis.
