Catalog description

Credits 3. 2 Lecture Hours. 2 Lab Hours. This course introduces students to the creative, analytical and technical techniques required to translate rich narrative ideas into innovative digital experiences across multiple media forms. Building from script analysis and visual storytelling fundamentals, students will explore how story structure, character and thematic intent transform when reimagined for screen, immersive and interactive contexts. The course spans linear and nonlinear modes of narrative, from short-form cinematic sequences and documentary hybrids to site-specific installations, augmented reality environments and online participatory works. Through both individual and collaborative exercises, students learn to adapt written and conceptual materials into digital storytelling prototypes that integrate visual, spatial and experiential design. Students will also examine the cultural and industrial frameworks surrounding intermedia and transmedia production, including intellectual property development, adaptation ethics and cross-platform authorship. By semester’s end, participants will have created a portfolio-ready project demonstrating their ability to translate complex textual or thematic material into a compelling, media-specific form of digital storytelling. Prerequisites: Graduate classification or approval of instructor.
