Energy Transition for Engineers and Geoscientists

Credits 3. 3 Lecture Hours. Designed for engineers and geoscientists with a good understanding of their disciplines but not necessarily any background in climate change, energy transition, life cycle analysis or alternative fuels. Energy concepts are examined in depth along with drivers for the energy transition. The course critically evaluates the role and continuing needs for fossil fuels in a world with increasing drivers away from such fuels. Practical approaches to quantifying and minimizing the carbon impact of oil and gas operations are presented. Key policy issues associated with the energy transition, including carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS), geothermal energy, blue and green hydrogen, biofuels and carbon-free energy sources. Technical details for the quantitative analysis of alternative and fossil fuel energy sources are mastered. Prerequisites: Graduate classification.
