Credits 3. 3 Lecture Hours. Explore the psychological science of the self, examining how individuals come to understand who they are and how that sense of self influences thoughts, emotions and behavior. Investigate core topics including self-concept, self-esteem, self-regulation, goals and social identities such as political, racial, religious, sexual, gender and national. Analyze the role of culture, social context and existential concerns — such as mortality and uncertainty — in shaping the self. Engage with research from cognitive, social, developmental and clinical psychology to understand the self as both a scientific construct and a central aspect of human experience. Prerequisite: PBSI 107 or approval of instructor.
