Credits 3. 3 Lecture Hours. Examines the fundamental physics underlying mass transport by diffusion in solids; applies basic principles to develop quantitative predictions of material behavior in technologically relevant contexts, such as interdiffusion, radiation response, nucleation and growth, solidification and phase separation. Emphasis is placed on independent development of solution strategies based on understanding of basic principles. Prerequisites: MEEN 222/MSEN 222 or equivalent materials science course; preliminary general thermodynamics course is not necessary.
