Understanding microbiomes, or microbial communities, in the oceans, soils and humans; definition of human, animal and environmental microbiomes; describing the methods used to characterize these microbiomes; discussion of the impact of microbiomes on the health and well-being of humans, animals and ecosystems; includes principles of evolution of microbial life and hosts, symbioses, ecology, pathogens, degradation and restoration of microbiomes; the importance of host-associated microbes to health, from humans to ecosystems, and the consequences of the impact of anthropogenic activities and lifestyles on the microbiome diversity. Prerequisites: Graduate classification or approval of instructor.
