Credits 3. 3 Lecture Hours. COURSE OVERVIEW. Examines journalistic storytelling within the evolving sports entertainment landscape. Explores formats ranging from narrative features and long-form commentary to rapid-cycle blogging, podcasts and fan-centered analysis. Emphasizes audience engagement, platform-specific voice and the blending of reporting, opinion and personality in sports media. Simulates newsroom or creator environments through recurring publishing deadlines and performance-based feedback. RELEVANCE AND APPLICATION. Builds marketable skills for careers in sports journalism, content creation, digital media, public relations or brand communications. Reinforces professional practices such as sourcing, accuracy, editorial decision-making, audience strategy and ethical judgment under time pressure. Supports civic and cultural awareness by examining how sports intersect with identity, economics, politics and public discourse. DEEPENING UNDERSTANDINGS. Considers how sports coverage functions not only as entertainment but also as storytelling that frames community, rivalry, aspiration and controversy. Reveals distinctions between reportage, commentary, satire and hype, clarifying how credibility and influence can be negotiated across formats. Informs reflection on how fandom, access and commercial pressures shape journalistic tone and judgment. TOPICS AND THEMES. May include analysis and production of sports blogs, feature stories, commentary pieces, social media threads, podcasts and/or multimedia packages. Consideration of athlete branding and influencer culture; fan communities and online discourse; ethics in sports reporting; representation and identity in sports narratives; commercialization of collegiate and professional athletics. May reference real-world cases involving controversy, misconduct and/or public debate when relevant to understanding communication choices in sports media. Prerequisite: Junior or senior classification, or approval of instructor.
