Credits 3. 3 Lecture Hours. COURSE OVERVIEW. Explores reporting and writing practices specific to arts and entertainment journalism across genres such as film, music, visual arts, live performance, food and/or popular culture. Emphasizes feature writing, criticism and commentary, combining descriptive narrative with analytical evaluation. Includes regular drafting, revision and editorial feedback in workshop-style settings. Course material may reference real-world works or events that evoke strong personal and/or cultural responses; such content is approached through ethical journalistic standards of observation, fairness and critique. RELEVANCE AND APPLICATION. Develops professional habits in research, interviewing, deadline writing and editorial collaboration relevant to journalism, reviewing, cultural reporting, media production, public relations and arts programming. Supports academic pathways in media criticism, narrative nonfiction and cultural studies. Reinforces transferable skills in analytical writing, public communication and civic engagement through responsible evaluation of cultural expression. DEEPENING UNDERSTANDINGS. Considers how arts and entertainment coverage blends storytelling with informed judgment, requiring both subject knowledge and ethical standards. Informs consideration of how tone, evidence and perspective shape credibility in evaluative writing. Explores how cultural journalism influences public conversation not by prescribing taste, but by modeling interpretation, context and reflection. TOPICS AND THEMES. May include analysis and practice of feature profiles, reviews, cultural commentary and long-form narrative; genre-specific approaches to writing about art, food, music, theater, fashion, television and film; techniques for descriptive reporting and sensory detail; methods of comparative evaluation; ethics of criticism and representation. Course content may involve engagement with controversial works, sensitive subject matter or emotionally charged performances, addressed for purposes of journalistic analysis. Prerequisite: Junior or senior classification or approval of instructor.
