Credits 3. 3 Lecture Hours. COURSE OVERVIEW. Explores the principles and practices of sports reporting across professional, collegiate and community contexts. Covers live event reporting, interviewing, beat reporting, deadline writing and industry-standard formatting such as AP style. Emphasizes ethical judgment in reporting of competition, emotion and/or controversy, while maintaining neutrality, accuracy and professionalism. Simulates newsroom workflows through field reporting, editorial review and revision. RELEVANCE AND APPLICATION. Builds applied competencies essential to careers in journalism, broadcasting, media relations, sports communication and content production. Reinforces transferable skills such as rapid information synthesis, audience adaptation, collaborative communication and deadline management. Supports broader workforce preparation in fields that require precise coordination, public-facing documentation and/or real-time decision-making. DEEPENING UNDERSTANDINGS. Reveals how sports journalism blends entertainment, data, human interest and public accountability. Highlights the role of the journalist in navigating fandom, institutional access and representation, balancing narrative engagement with accuracy and fairness. Encourages awareness of how reporting choices influence perceptions of competition, identity and/or community. TOPICS AND THEMES. May include field interviewing; live coverage of sporting events; beat development; game recaps and feature storytelling; multimedia integration (audio, photo, mobile journalism); sports ethics and conflict-of-interest management; representation of athletes and teams across gender, race, class or institutional lines. Course material may involve observation or documentation of competitive, emotional and/or contentious sports environments, approached with sensitivity and professional responsibility. Prerequisite: Junior or senior classification.
