Credits 3. 3 Lecture Hours. COURSE OVERVIEW. Explores multimedia reporting using mobile devices as primary tools for journalistic production. Covers techniques in audio gathering, digital still photography and video documentation, with emphasis on recording, editing, scripting and real-time publishing across multiple digital platforms. Simulates newsroom environments through deadline-based production, critique and revision. RELEVANCE AND APPLICATION. Builds core competencies required in contemporary newsrooms and digital media industries, including rapid field reporting, technical versatility, editorial collaboration and/or content adaptation across platforms. Supports workforce preparation in journalism, strategic communication, digital content creation, nonprofit storytelling and public information roles. Reinforces transferable skills, including judgment under pressure, visual literacy and evidence-based storytelling, relevant to civic participation and public-facing professions. DEEPENING UNDERSTANDINGS. Highlights the distinction between casual mobile content creation and journalistic media production grounded in ethics, verification and clarity of purpose. Encourages critical reflection on how choices in framing, sequencing and platform affect audience interpretation. Demonstrates how professional credibility is constructed through transparency, accuracy and responsibility in visual storytelling. TOPICS AND THEMES. May include study and practice of field recording techniques; audio scripting and narration; photo composition and ethical editing; video sequencing and interview setups; platform-specific publishing strategies; story pitching and editorial feedback; coverage of unfolding public events; ethical judgment and/or professional analysis. Assignments may involve documenting real-world environments — including emotionally charged settings or moments of conflict, controversy, hardship, celebration or vulnerability — approached for the purposes of visual analysis and responsible reporting. Prerequisite: Junior or senior classification or approval of instructor.
