Credits 3. 3 Lecture Hours. COURSE OVERVIEW. Explores how televised sports are produced behind the scenes, from planning to live execution. Introduces the roles of producers, directors, announcers, camera operators and technical crews, emphasizing collaboration across production teams. Examines historic developments in sports broadcasting alongside contemporary industry practices, including graphics, replay operations and/or real-time storytelling. Course content may reference high-pressure or emotionally charged broadcast situations for the purpose of professional analysis. RELEVANCE AND APPLICATION. Develops workforce-ready skills in research, coordination and deadline-driven collaboration through engagement with live event production and sports media workflows. Provides practical experience in broadcast storytelling, technical setup and real-time decision-making. Builds foundations for effective communication under pressure, rapid problem-solving and teamwork, competencies that transfer to careers in media, athletics, production management and other professional or academic settings requiring precision and adaptability. DEEPENING UNDERSTANDINGS. Considers how sports broadcasting functions as both entertainment and institutional messaging, shaping narratives of competition, identity and community. Examines ways production choices, such as camera angles, commentary, graphics and pacing, frame audience perception. Informs reflection on how spectacle, emotion and/or technology intersect in mediated sport. TOPICS AND THEMES. May include study of broadcast history and industry structure; producer and director decision-making; live graphics and replay systems; commentary and on-air performance roles; camera work and technical operations; crisis management during live events; ethics of representation in sports storytelling; evolution of streaming, social media integration and fan engagement. Course materials may include footage depicting intense competition, injury or heightened emotion, examined for purposes of professional critique.
