Credits 3. 3 Lecture Hours. Critical examination of various approaches to the study of clientelism in the developing countries, with a particular focus on political institutions and party politics; exploration of the meaning of clientelism, how it relates to corruption, electoral fraud and patrimonialism and how clientelistic practices such as vote buying and patronage are still being practiced in many developing societies; investigation of the causes of this phenomenon, the factors for its prevalence in the 21st century and its implications on the quality of democracy. Prerequisite: Graduate classification.
