An exploration of the development of the American novel; study of representative novels, topics and relevant histories from the early national period through the antebellum era until the end of the century. Instructors teaching this class will choose texts, assessments and approaches that represent current scholarship and satisfy course learning objectives. Prerequisite: 3 credits of literature at 200-level or above.
