Credits 3. 3 Lecture Hours. COURSE OVERVIEW. Focuses on the application of empirical research methods through the design and completion of a communication research project. Emphasizes experimental and survey-based approaches, with integration of qualitative components as appropriate to research design. Addresses each stage of the research process, including topic selection, research questions, hypothesis development, data collection, statistical analysis, interpretation and presentation of findings. Builds on concepts introduced in COMM 308 by moving from principles to practice in conducting communication research. RELEVANCE AND APPLICATION. Connects research activity to fields such as communication science, health communication, media research, organizational studies and strategic messaging. Involves skills relevant to project-based inquiry, data collection, measurement strategy, statistical interpretation, evidence-based reporting and research presentation. Aligns with professional and academic settings where data-driven analysis, program evaluation and applied research inform communication decisions. DEEPENING UNDERSTANDINGS. Highlights how knowledge is produced through systematic inquiry rather than assumption or anecdote. Reinforces literacy in the scientific method, including reliability, validity, interpretation of evidence and limits of generalization. Clarifies how empirical findings contribute to understanding communication behavior and outcomes. TOPICS AND THEMES. May include research design and project planning; formulation of research questions and hypotheses; development of measures and instruments; data collection through experimentation, survey methods or mixed approaches; statistical testing; interpretation of results; identification of limitations; written and oral presentation of findings. Course projects may address interpersonal, organizational, media, digital, health or political communication contexts. Prerequisites: Grade of C or better in COMM 308 ; STAT 201 or 303; junior or senior classification.
