Credits 3. 3 Lecture Hours. This course deals with a systematic observation in educational settings with the purpose of assessing and evaluating instruction and making recommendations for its improvement. Most key components of classroom observation for emergent bilingual, English as a second language (ESL) and dual language programs include language content, communication mode, language of instruction and activity structures. The course will be organized around the following topics: significance of classroom observations for improving instructional capacity; potential impact to address the education needs of all learners with special emphasis in emergent bilingual, English learners and dual language learners; theoretical frame work, operational definitions, theoretical models and constructs for classroom observation; classroom observation and coding process; some more used classroom observation instruments; Pedagogical Observation Protocol instruments with current typical measurement practices; validation evidence, predictive validity; validation research questions on classroom observation: intra-rater reliability, inter-rater reliability of pedagogical observation protocols between human coders and machine coders, inter-rater reliability of the Pedagogical Observation Protocol among coders who are more experienced versus those who are less experienced; predictive validity under bilingual, ESL and dual language strategies, language content, language of instruction, communication mode, physical grouping and activity structure; other classroom observation instruments for bilingual and language learners; the future of classroom observation through artificial intelligence. Prerequisites: Graduate classification or approval of instructor.
