Credits 3. 3 Lecture Hours. COURSE OVERVIEW. Introduces quantitative ethnographic field methods commonly used in anthropological research to formally test hypotheses. Explores the benefits and challenges of applying structured, quantitative techniques to the study of complex cultural phenomena within a field largely dominated by qualitative methods. Covers best practices for managing and analyzing anthropological datasets. Surveys common ethnographic methods designed to enhance comparability and analytical rigor of ethnographic research, including structured interviews, text analysis and network analysis. Through hands-on assignments, provides practical experience in developing and executing small-scale research projects. TOPICS AND THEMES. Topics include ethical considerations in field research, research design, data management, statistical analysis, structured interviews, online survey tools, standardized observation, network analysis, text analysis and cultural consensus analysis. Also includes student participation in all stages of the research process, including research design, data collection, data management and analysis, and write-up. Prerequisite: Junior or senior classification.
