Science, Pseudoscience and Critical Thinking in Anthropology

Credits 3. 3 Lecture Hours. COURSE OVERVIEW. Examination of extraordinary claims made across a wide spectrum of media in the fields of anthropology, biological anthropology and archaeology. Emphasis on distinguishing science from pseudoscience through application of the scientific method, logical reasoning and critical evaluation of empirical evidence. Writing-intensive assignments develop students’ critical thinking, analytical skills and ability to communicate effectively about complex and sometimes controversial issues in anthropology and in broader scientific inquiry. Attention to recognizing and refuting poor scientific reasoning, evaluation of media portrayal of science and clear dissemination of ideas within and beyond academic contexts. TOPICS AND THEMES. May include exploration of science, pseudoscience, pathological science, junk science and anti-science; scientific hoaxes, frauds and exaggeration of evidence; the scientific method and the use and misuse of statistics and illustrations; distortions of anthropological and scientific knowledge across a variety of media platforms, including social media and ‘fake news’; history of the discipline of anthropology; IQ testing, race, and racism; creation science, natural selection, and evolution; cryptozoology, bigfoot and aquatic apes; the use, misuse and abuse of the archaeological record in both scientific and popular discourse; the supernatural realm; and conspiracy theories, climate science and vaccine efficacy. Course discussions may also engage diverse and sometimes unfamiliar perspectives, reflecting a variety of contexts – scientific, professional, political, cultural – in which group communication occurs. Prerequisite: Junior or senior classification or approval of instructor; also taught at Galveston campus.
