Credits 3. 3 Lecture Hours. COURSE OVERVIEW. Examines archaeological, environmental, geological and genetic evidence related to the timing of human entry into the Americas and megafaunal extinctions at the end of the Pleistocene. Engages students in the most recent findings from archaeological sites across the Americas. In this class students learn to evaluate evidence critically and synthesize the most up to date information on human dispersals in the western hemisphere at the end of the last Ice Age. TOPICS AND THEMES. Chronology and migration routes of early settlement; environmental and landscape change, important archeological sites in North, Central and South America, controversial claims and standards of evidence, theories of forager mobility and landscape learning and current methods accelerating the pace of discoveries. Prerequisite: ANTH 202 or equivalent.
