Credits 3. 3 Lecture Hours. COURSE OVERVIEW. Investigates the broad spectrum of cultural dynamics, providing an overview of how societies transform and adapt through cultural change. Examines diverse methodologies and theoretical approaches used to document and interpret these shifts. Draws on case studies and source materials from all areas of anthropology, integrating knowledge from allied fields. Develops a strong understanding of the complexities inherent in cultural change. Enhances the ability to employ theoretical concepts in novel and innovative ways. Clarifies the practical need to apply anthropological knowledge in programs of directed change. Encourages respectful critique and defense of diverse points of view regarding current social issues. TOPICS AND THEMES. Studies the fundamental concept of culture; analyzes definitions, overviews and data sources related to cultural change; investigates dynamic processes such as innovation, diffusion and acculturation; considers theoretical approaches including functionalism, cultural materialism and cultural evolution; examines maladaptive traits and Darwinian evolutionary principles applied to culture; explores the intersection of cultural change and health; and analyzes colonial legacies and the dynamics of directed change.
