Catalog description

This course introduces the fundamental concepts as well as the uses and abuses of artificial intelligence (AI) in crime and criminal justice. It includes crimes involving AI (e.g., AI serving as a tool in committing criminal offences, attacks targeting AI systems, and AI actively engaging in criminal behavior), as well as how individuals and groups employ AI technologies to recruit, train, victimize, and profit from illicit and organized criminal activities, cybercrimes and terrorism. It teaches the applications of AI in policing, courts, corrections, and crime prevention, as well as the ethical, legal, and policy debates surrounding the detection, reporting, investigation, and control of crime. This course also covers the implications of AI for researching crime and criminal justice issues. The course combines theoretical foundations with practical case studies, policy discussions, and global perspectives to help students understand and critically assess the role of AI in crime and justice in today’s information age.
