East Asian Politics

Catalog description

Comparison of the political dynamics and policy behaviors of the systems in East Asia, with a particular focus on the five East Asian states: China, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, and North Korea. The course examines and compares the major aspects and functions in each of these countries, such as the conditions of regime formation, their political ideologies, the process of economic development and democratization, and foreign policies as an extension of domestic politics. Major contemporary issues and policies of the East Asian systems will be surveyed, with a particular emphasis on how each government enhances its regime’s claim to political legitimacy.
