20th Century US Popular Culture

Catalog description

This course is intended to serve as a survey of the popular culture of the 20th Century, beginning with the introduction of moving pictures in 1896 and ending in 1999. The course will examine all forms of popular culture from motion pictures, numerous musical genres, popular literature, radio, television, foodways, art, fashion, automotive culture, and fads such as hoola hoops and pet rocks. The course will contextualize the various expressions of popular culture, and analyze how they were affected by the politics and current events of the day.
