PHCY 3401
IPPE 5: Applied Therapeutics 2
The University of Tennessee Health Science Center · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
This final required introductory pharmacy practice experience (IPPE) expands from PHCY 2402 by fostering efficiency and clinical reasoning in providing pharmacy services and patient care in a health-system. The IPPE will occur longitudinally across the fall semester of the third professional year in a health-system setting. Students will time each week at a hospital or health-system working with their assigned preceptor to apply the Pharmacists’ Patient Care Process’ to the interprofessional care of patients. Students will collect, interpret, and assess patient information; identify actual and potential medication-related problems; and develop an evidence-based plan. Students will progressively build the ability to manage multiple patients efficiently, prioritize tasks, and communicate clinical plans to the preceptor, peers, and the interprofessional team. This experience fosters higher-level clinical judgement, time management, and professional confidence while preparing students for advanced pharmacy practice experiences (APPEs). Students are expected to engage professionally with peers, preceptors, and patients while demonstrating appropriate communication, accountability, and respect for all members of the healthcare team.
