Health Outcomes and the Pharmacist

This required course builds students’ knowledge of health outcomes and their application in patient care, pharmacy practice, and research. Students will explore clinical, humanistic, and economic outcomes, focusing on how to select appropriate measures for various research questions and practice settings. The course introduces pharmacoeconomics and related analyses, highlighting their role in drug development, managed care, healthcare decision-making, and pharmacy practice. Additional topics include health informatics, data analytics, with applications in outcomes research and system-level management. Students will explore how health outcomes inform healthcare policy, value-based care models, and performance metrics, as well as how they support quality improvement, outcomes-based decision-making, and strategic management in pharmacy and health systems. This course will also introduce comparative effectiveness research (CER) and its role in evaluating interventions, guiding formulary and policy decisions, and improving patient and health system outcomes.
