Transplant Nephrology

Catalog description

This is a face to face clinical rotation receiving 3 or 6 credit hours. The student should function with increased autonomy in patient care and must demonstrate competency in several of the Entrustable Professional Activities required for graduation. Transplant Nephrology provides a comprehensive experience combining both inpatient and outpatient care. Students will manage post-transplant patients, addressing both transplant-related issues (e.g., rejection, immunosuppression, opportunistic infections) and general medical conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, and CKD as the primary admitting service. The rotation includes active participation in patient rounds, interdisciplinary team discussions, transition of care, pre transplant evaluation workup and outpatient follow-up visits. Students will gain hands-on experience in diagnosing and treating acute and chronic complications, learning to navigate complex care systems, and enhancing communication skills with patients and healthcare teams. They will also engage in quality improvement initiatives, selection committee meetings and contribute to didactic case presentations. By the end of the rotation, students will develop a solid understanding of transplant nephrology, patient-centered care, and interprofessional collaboration, while refining their clinical decision-making skills in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
