Catalog description

This is a face to face clinical rotation receiving 3 credit hours. Medical Spanish is a two-week, in-person mini-term elective on the UTHSC College of Medicine - Knoxville campus that introduces fourth-year students to essential Spanish for clinical encounters. Learners build core grammar and clinical vocabulary for history taking, physical exam language, and common scenarios; practice through structured dialogues, role-play, and case-based communication; and strengthen cultural competence for Spanish-speaking patient care. Class meets Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., with assigned independent study, homework, and oral assessments. The course is graded Pass/Fail. The primary text is An Introduction to Medical Spanish: Communication and Culture (5th ed., Yale University Press).
