Neighborhood Health Hub Elective

Catalog description
This is a face to face clinical rotation receiving 6 credit hours. The student should function with increased autonomy in patient care and must demonstrate competency in several of the Entrustable Professional Activities required for graduation. The objectives of the Neighborhood Health Hub clerkship are: (1) to receive in-depth orientation to the services and activities of a neighborhood health hub; (2) to assist with community outreach and screenings; (3) to learn how to identify and “close the loop” on patient social needs, (4) to complete a certification in motivational interviewing, a patient-centered communication approach; and (5) to provide health coaching to a health hub client. The student will work in a neighborhood health hub that provides a variety of activities and services for community members. They will observe and/or participate in health screenings, supervised exercise classes, cooking demonstrations, health screenings, health coaching, and outreach activities. In addition, after completing a certification in motivational interviewing, they will provide one or more health coaching sessions to a community member. This clerkship is offered in Memphis at either the UTHSC Health Hub -Uptown or ShelbyCares on Third.
