This course focuses on contemporary issues in planning, establishing, and managing forests and trees in urban ecosystems. It will discuss why we have trees in cities and communities and how we use them, introduce the appraisal and inventory of urban trees, and highlight the planning and management of urban forests. The course will also give a global perspective on urban forests. Key topics include the definition, history, and importance of urban forestry; urban tree planning and maintenance; urban tree assessment; urban forestry management and policy; and urban forestry programs, profession, and education. In addition, this course will provide a problem-based learning experience to students with real-world case studies. This course focuses on contemporary issues in planning, establishing, and managing forests and trees in urban ecosystems for 4000 and 5000-level students. The course will have the same topics for both 4000 and 5000 levels, but 5000 level students will be required to complete an additional term paper.
