This four-credit, lab-based course provides a comprehensive overview of the physical, chemical, and biological properties of soils. It emphasizes the essential roles of soils in ecosystem function and their susceptibility to natural and human-induced degradation. Core topics include soil formation, classification (taxonomy), soil water dynamics, and soil organic matter. Students will examine soil physical and chemical properties and their applications in nutrient management and soil health. The course consists of three hours of lecture and one laboratory session per week, complemented by hands-on laboratory exercises and field experiences that reinforce fundamental concepts introduced in class. These applied components enable students to analyze, interpret, and address real-world soil management challenges. Three lectures and one laboratory period per week.
