Catalog description

This course provides an overview of fundamental principles and applications in biotechnology. Students will develop a broad understanding of the scientific, ethical, social, political, and economic issues surrounding modern biotechnological advances. Emphasis is placed on building foundational knowledge and practical skills necessary to apply biotechnology concepts and engage in informed decision-making. Upon successful completion, students will be able to: Demonstrate understanding of key genetic terminology and concepts Analyze cellular structures and functions, including organelle roles Explain the central dogma of molecular biology and the role of macromolecules Apply foundational techniques in DNA isolation, characterization, transformation, and genetic manipulation Conduct and evaluate laboratory exercises using standard aseptic techniques Communicate biotechnology concepts effectively and participate in informed discussions related to biotechnology applications and product choices
