Exercise as Medicine

Catalog description
This class examines the impact of physical activity, exercise, nutrition, and lifestyle related factors on health and the prevention and treatment of chronic disease. Students will learn the physiological basis of cardiorespiratory and musculoskeletal fitness, how these are influenced by exercise and physical activity, and their relation to health and disease. The therapeutic effect of exercise will be compared to traditional pharmacological treatment approaches where applicable. In addition, students will be challenged to consider the personal, spiritual, and social responsibilities of maintaining an optimal level of fitness as they apply course content to their own life. Meets the 3-hour foundational core stewardship of the body requirement.
