Catalog description

This seminar course examines education in diverse settings, focusing on the impact of social class, race/ethnicity, and English language proficiency on learning. Through readings, discussions, and field trips to schools and organizations serving diverse populations, students will explore the roles of educators and community members in working with diverse learners. The impact of local, state, and federal agencies in relationship to public educational policy are discussed and analyzed. This course also emphasizes working with Multilingual Learners of English (MLEs), examining current guidelines in ESL education, appropriate instructional practices, and techniques for creating inclusive, equitable learning environments that address linguistic and cultural barriers. A class fee is necessary to cover field trip expenses. Prerequisite or Corequisite: EDU 150 or by permission of the instructor. Meets foundational core civic engagement requirement. Offered Fall and Spring semesters.
