Aging in Prisons

Demographic changes in the United States have long indicated that we are an aging society. The trend also holds true for incarcerated people. Approximately 10% of the prison population is over the age of 55 (Federal Bureau of Prisons, 2021), and many currently incarcerated people will reach old age before their release from prison. This population presents unique challenges. Older adults in prison, especially those in minority groups, have chronic medical conditions, untreated mental health issues, and long histories of traumatic life experiences. This course provides an interdisciplinary perspective on aging and will introduce strategies that health and human services professionals can utilize to better serve older adults in prison.
