Aesthetics and the Philosophy of Art

What makes something “art”? Is everyone’s interpretation of an artwork’s meaning equally plausible, or is expertise important? Why do some of us appreciate a particular work of art, but others don’t connect to it? Can art have socio-political or ethical value? Is censorship ever justified? Throughout this course, we’ll consider questions like these, bringing historical philosophical figures as well as more contemporary philosophical theories into conversation with various artworks.
