PHI 222
Beer ‘n’ Wings: Food Philosophy
University at Buffalo (SUNY) · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
What makes a beer a good one? Should we be eating chicken wings, or other factory farmed meats? If you swap out just one ingredient from a recipe, did you just come up with a new recipe? Can a robot follow a recipe? And how does anyone follow a recipe anyway, given how ambiguous they can be? Does everyone have a right to food? How should food be produced? These questions and more are at the heart of the philosophy of food. In this course we’ll take a deep dive into philosophical puzzles simmering within the culinary arts. We’ll explore the metaphysical issues surrounding the nature of recipes, the aesthetics and authenticity of wine, the classification of cocktails, and the ethics and social implications of food and food culture.
