Catalog description

Functional materials are generally referred to as electronic, magnetic, and optical materials which possess unique properties important for applications such as microelectronic devices, sensors and actuators, devices for energy generation and storage, among others. Since the physical properties of functional materials are sensitive to crystal structures, processing conditions, microstructures, and environments, it is critical to understand the processing-structure-property relationship of such materials. This course is an introduction to functional materials, their properties, and applications. Topics to be covered include semiconductors, dielectric materials, piezoelectric materials, and magnetic materials. The course will emphasize the applications of functional materials and data methods to guide the design of functional materials with desired properties.
