Statistical Principles of Materials Informatics
University at Buffalo (SUNY) · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
This course introduces students to statistical and mathematical ideas that are important in learning about materials and their properties. By the end of the course, you should be able to: retrieve and manipulate data sets from a variety of sources; perform exploratory data analysis and visualization to understand properties, trends and geometry of materials data; use, develop and fit statistical models to describe data in order to make predictions or perform inference; identify the inherent structure and dimensionality of data; quantify uncertainty about predictions, parameter values or quantities derived from the data; employ statistically sound and rigorous practices to analyze data; become comfortable using computational tools to execute analysis. Exercises and examples will be drawn from chemical, physics, and material data sets.
