Quantitative Methods for Linguistics and Language Studies using R

This course will introduce students to basic and advanced statistical methods for analyzing linguistic data using R, an open-source statistical software package. Topics include R tutorials, basic probability, distributional and variable types, variance, sampling, the central limit theorem, tests for normality, correlation, analysis of variance, methods of regression (linear, multiple, ordinal, logistic), contrast coding, multicollinearity, homoscedasticity, repeated measures design, clustering/classification analyses, p-hacking, NHST, mixed effects modeling, and methods of model comparison. Students will learn to use R statistical computing software not only for statistics, but also for data visualization and manipulation. Emphasis will be placed on pattern discovery procedures and the practical use of real-world data sets involving linguistic data. This course is dual listed with LIN 569.
