IDS 416
Advanced Land-Based Learning
University at Buffalo (SUNY) · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
Indigenous peoples’ ways of knowing view the Earth as a relative, life sustainer, and teacher. This course does a “deep dive” into land-based learning to understand its positionality within Indigenous studies as a dynamic, time-tested epistemology and pedagogy. Students will substantively engage Indigenous natural and social sciences, and humanities throughout the semester. A strong emphasis on experiential learning will give students a multifaceted approach to Indigenous philosophies and teachings regarding the natural world. There will be several outdoor activity field trips and a weekend-long hide tanning workshop. This course is dual-listed with IDS 516.
