This course examines the encounters between Indigenous North Americans and Europeans in the three centuries after Columbus’s arrival in the Americas. Beginning with an examination of Indigenous societies before 1492, the course then considers the interactions between Native Americans and Europeans in a variety of geographical contexts. Topics include Native religion and interactions with European missionaries, the growth of trade and the pressures placed on the environment, and the evolution of warfare. Readings are drawn from archaeology, ethnography, and primary historical documents, as well as key secondary sources. PRE
