Latinx History, 1500 to Present

Catalog description

Beginning in the 16th century and stretching to the present, this class will map the varied terrains of Latinx history, exploring the Mexican American, Puerto Rican, Cuban American, Dominican American, and Central American experiences in the United States. Major themes will include the intimate details of conquest and resistance, immigration, work, and the creation of racial and sexual differences within and between Latina/o communities. We will cover barrios in the Southwest, migratory routes to the Midwest, and the creation of multi-ethnic communities in the Northeast. The course will also focus on shared Latinx identity and changing images of Latina/os within American popular culture.
