Catalog description

This course introduces students to the history of the original inhabitants of North America and their descendants with special focus from the era of the Dawes Act (1887) to the present. We will focus especially on the relationship between Native American history and U.S. history, given that the United States is built on Indigenous lands. Students will learn about the diversity of Native groups in North America, the influence of colonization on Native peoples including the issues of genocide, Native strategies of adaptation and survival, and Native struggles for sovereignty, survivance, and cultural identity that continue into the present.
