Health & Disability Justice

Catalog description

This course charts important developments in critical disability studies scholarship and related feminist and ethnic studies inquiry that departs from single-issue disability rights paradigms to demand disability justice. Built on Black and transnational feminist and queer praxis, disability justice makes intersectional demands for the liberation of bodies rendered abnormal and made sick and disabled in the majority world under heteropatriarchy, colonialism, ethnonationalism, and capitalism. Some key concepts and frameworks include antiblackness and the nonhuman, settler colonial benevolence and rehabilitation, discursive and material disablement, carceral care, and crip of color critique. We will read academic monographs as well as activist and popular literature. This course is dual-listed with GGS 532.
