Transnational Feminisms and Women’s Movements

Provides an overview of women’s and feminist movements from a transnational feminist perspective. Drawing from reading across disciplines, the class emphasizes the organizational and empowerment strategies used by these movements in local and regional struggles for social change. In particular, we look at women’s and feminist movements in sites across the Global South and assess women’s and sexual minorities share in demanding self-determination through various forms of activism against racism, migration, exploitation, political exclusion, reproductive injustice, colonialism, and violence. The goal of the course is to help students sharpen their analytical skills in thinking about economic, racial, colonial, migratory, political, and social forces at national and international levels while at the same time learning more about struggles that seek to confront differing forms of oppression.
