Gender, Race, and Class in the Global South

This course is a survey of the socioeconomic statuses, political roles, and forms of cultural production of women and gender variant peoples of the Global South, including an examination of the policies and practices that shape their lives, as well as cultural and aesthetic discourses that construct their experiences and self-expression. The course analyzes the organizing, advocacy and social mobilization of women and gender variant peoples to engender justice and social transformation and question processes of racialization. Course content includes an introduction to a broad, interdisciplinary and international literature focusing on current and emerging issues related to the rights of women and sexual minorities; gender-based violence; racism and racial violence, labor and globalization; poverty and inequality; displacement and environmental degradation; colonialism and decolonization movements, across a variety of national, regional, and global contexts.
