Environmental Media Production

Catalog description

This course is an intensive workshop in environmental media production for graduate students and advanced undergraduates across disciplines. Through readings, screenings, class presentations, and discussions, students will investigate and interrogate an array of approaches to communicating ideas and creating art about the environment and catalyzing social change toward a more sustainable society. We will explore the recent history of creating environmental media in the era of climate chaos, and we will ask what kinds of media we will need in the future to move our societies in the direction of ecological sustainability. Students will develop and create media production projects, related to environmental concerns, in film/time-based media art, podcasting, and visual art, in addition to a final project in the medium of their choice, interpreted broadly, including films, podcasts, photography, visual art, XR, video games, and text. There will be multiple stages of the production projects throughout the semester, and we will workshop each stage in class. This is an advanced production course that requires students to be familiar with the production processes and techniques of a variety of media or be willing to learn them in the course of the class.
