Sustainability Transformations in Practice
University at Buffalo (SUNY) · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
Why does sustainability remain difficult to achieve and how might we intentionally foster transitions toward more just and durable systems? Through a series of structured case studies, students undertake a historical study of socio-technical transitions-systems-level transformation processes in which societal sectors change in fundamental ways over generational timescales. Then, students develop a case study of their own and propose system interventions aimed at increasing the likelihood of sustainability. Throughout, students grapple with the strategic, ecological, ethical, and governance dimensions of sustainability action, with particular attention to the conditions under which transitions can be considered just.
