Introduction to Python for Earth Scientists

Catalog description
This course will introduce students to the basics and best practices of Python coding for scientific applications. By the end of the course, students will be able to write basic and more advanced computer programs for processing, viewing, and organizing scientific data. This course will assume no background in computer programming and will work to build competence throughout the term with in-class assignments and homework that will culminate in a student-designed final project. The tools taught in this course will be applicable to all students who work with data. Common Python packages used in the Earth Sciences will be introduced. This course will be taught in Python using Jupyter Notebooks. This course is dual-listed with ERT 592.
